The cold morning air seemed to seep into Oliver’s bones as he arrived at the office. The sun hadn't yet risen, casting long shadows across the empty parking lot. The building loomed before him, a symbol of everything he felt he’d become. This was the same office he’d started in fifteen years ago, eager and full of hope.

He was talking to a manager about a new project when he learned the awful truth. A recent hire, with less experience and fewer responsibilities, was making more money than him.

The weight of the knowledge settled on him like a physical burden. His breath hitched. All the energy he used to have was gone, leaving him hollow. The words of his manager echoed in his mind, and the walls of his cubicle seemed to close in around him. He felt… empty.
